The College of Polytechnics Jihlava witnessed incredible transformations during the Researchers’ Night

The Researchers’ Night took place for the fourth time on Friday 27 September 2024 at the College of Polytechnics Jihlava. The only higher education institution based in the Vysočina Region offered a rich programme on the theme of transformation, which was chosen this year to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Franz Kafka. The science-popularization event, during which scientific and research institutes and other institutions in dozens of Czech towns and villages make their premises open to the general public in the evening, attracted around 700 visitors to the VŠPJ.

At the VŠPJ, the doors opened to all those interested in science as early as 16:30, with the first programme items awaiting them from 17:00, focusing on the transformation of a wide range of different disciplines. An incredible phenomenon that is undergoing rapid transformations literally from day to day is artificial intelligence. And at the VŠPJ several items of the programme were dedicated to this phenomenon. Visitors could explore the diverse visual possibilities of artificial intelligence, for example, in the AI photo corner, which was prepared especially for the Researchers’ Night by the academic staff of the Department of Economic Studies of the College of Polytechnics Jihlava. The opportunity to learn more about the basics of AI, machine learning and neural networks was then brought by a lecture by Ing. Jan Mittner, Ph.D., from the Department of Technical Studies at the College of Polytechnics Jihlava, entitled How AI and neural networks are transforming the present. During the presentation Ing. Michal Brožek from Bosch Powertrain s.r.o., entitled Weld Quality Detection Using AI, they were able to see for themselves how artificial intelligence can be used in practical applications in industry.

A theoretical computer scientist and psychologist Dr. Filip Dechterenko from the Department of Mathematics also deals with artificial intelligence in his work. However, for this year's Night of Scientists, he decided to focus on a slightly different topic. In his lecture entitled "The Transformations of Measuring the Human Soul", which took place in the auditorium of the Learning Centre, visitors were able to look into the fascinating world of psychological testing, which helps us to gain insight into the secrets of the human mind. Visitors to the auditorium of the VŠPJ Learning Centre also attended a lecture by the Rector of the VŠPJ, Zdeněk Horák, during which they could learn about the unusual field of forensic biomechanics, which uses special procedures and methods to clarify serious violent crimes or accidents. Together they investigated the ancient case of Jan Masaryk's fall from the window of the Czernin Palace, found out what happened in Hurghada, Egypt or who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.

The Department of Health Studies, whose premises and equipment have undergone significant changes this year, also participated in the Researchers’ Night at the College of Polytechnics Jihlava. Visitors had the opportunity to visit, for example, the new simulation room of the delivery room. During the tour, they were able to see unique newborn models that simulate important vital signs and are linked to monitoring systems. A new intensive care unit simulation classroom was also opened, in which students from the Department of Health Studies prepare for challenging situations they may encounter during their future careers in healthcare. A lecture entitled How to do first aid for choking, in turn, introduced interested participants to procedures that can make a major difference at a critical moment and help save a life. It was also possible to turn into a medical staff for a moment and try out taking blood or resuscitating an adult or a newborn.

As usual, the Department of Technical Studies was present at the Researchers’ Night with a wide range of guided tours and lectures. Visitors could learn about the incredible progress in the field of digitization during a lecture by Dr. Jakub Novotný from the Department of Technical Studies entitled Digitization of Transformations - Transformations of Digitization. Interested visitors could also visit the new automation lab, the CP Factory learning factory or the new 3D printing lab. As in previous years, it was also possible to go to the roof of the VŠPJ building, where a weather station monitoring the constant changes in the weather is located.

Other departments of the College of Polytechnics Jihlava did not stay away from this year's Scientists' Night. For the first time ever, the Department of Tourism took part in the Researchers’ Night. In cooperation with the Travel Agency of the College of Polytechnics Jihlava, the department prepared a unique tour of the city, which was attended by several brave curious people despite the bad weather. The Department of Social Work offered a unique opportunity to try on the so-called "drunken" glasses and observe how alcohol can completely transform our sensory perception as well as our motor and intellectual abilities. A fascinating transformation of the world view was also provided by the seminar How the Golden Section Transforms the World, prepared for the Researchers’ Night by Ing. Stanislava Dvořáková, Ph.D., from the Department of Mathematics in cooperation with the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists. The sports cabinet then provided an introduction to the QUALISYS system, which can monitor the quality of movement and musculoskeletal system.

The Researchers’ Night, which was supported this year by the European Union's Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions programme with the METAMORPHOSIS project under the HORIZON-MSCA-2023-CITIZENS-01 call, attempted to attract children and interested parties from the more remote parts of the Vysočina Region to science. The unique opportunity to travel free of charge to Jihlava and back, to experience the Researchers’ Night and to learn more about science and research in the regional city of Vysočina was used by almost pupils and their teachers from the Bohdalov Primary School and Kindergarten.
