The Rector of the VŠPJ Zdeněk Horák together with the Vice-Rector of the VŠPJ for Studies Martina Kuncová laid flowers at the memorial plaque of Evžen Plocek on Masaryk Square in Jihlava on Wednesday 21 August 2024. It is exactly 56 years since the armies of the five communist countries of the Warsaw Pact invaded the former Czechoslovakia, ending the reform period known as the Prague Spring. Attempts to reform socialism were suppressed and the people of Czechoslovakia lost their freedom for more than twenty years.

The invasion, however, was not just the end of efforts to democratize the socialist system in Czechoslovakia. According to sources at the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, the August invasion resulted in a total of 137 deaths and roughly 500 serious and hundreds of lightly wounded people across the Czech Republic. The Rector of the University of Applied Sciences Zdeněk Horák and the Vice-Rector of the University of Applied Sciences Martina Kuncová commemorated these sad events of August by laying a bouquet at the memorial plaque of Evžen Plocek on Masaryk Square in Jihlava.
