VŠPJ honoured the memory of political prisoners executed in the 1950s in Jihlava

The commemoration of the victims of judicial murders of political prisoners executed in the prison of the Regional Court in Jihlava in the 1950s was organized on Sunday, 4 August 2024, by the city of Jihlava in cooperation with the Jihlava branch of the Confederation of Political Prisoners.

In addition to Iveta Slancová, the President of the Senate Miloš Vystrčil, the Governor of the Vysočina Region Vítězslav Schrek, the Deputy Mayors of the Statutory City of Jihlava Radek Popelka and Martin Laštovička, and representatives of the Confederation of Political Prisoners of the Czech Republic, the Police of the Czech Republic and the Army of the Czech Republic came to lay bouquets at the memorial, which is located at the building of the Jihlava Polytechnic University in Tyršova Street.

The memorial with the names of the victims of communist justice has stood at the Jihlava Polytechnic University since 1993. Since 5 June 2024, it has been complemented by a new Memorial to the executed innocent victims of the communist regime, which stands nearby, right at the site of the wall where the executions took place.

The commemoration was preceded by a Mass at the Church of St. Ignatius on Masaryk Square in Jihlava, celebrated by P. Cyril Vojtěch Kodet, O. Carm., prior of the Carmelite Convent in Prague-Liboc.

At the end of the commemoration, the participants observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims.
