The importance of regional universities was discussed at VŠPJ

The Polytechnic College Jihlava organised a round table discussion on 4 June 2024 in the Learning Centre. Representatives of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, the Vysočina Region, the Chamber of Commerce of the Czech Republic, the Labour Office of the Czech Republic and the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen discussed the importance of regional universities for the regions in the Czech Republic. The event was held as part of the celebration of the Week of Higher Education in Jihlava - 20 years of the VŠPJ with the support of the Highlands Region, State City of Jihlava and European Region Danube-Vltava.

Invitation to the premises of the regional centre of education of the Vysočina Region was accepted and the roles of panelists were played by the Rector of the Higher School of Education Zdeněk Horák, First Deputy Governor of the Vysočina Region Hana Hajnová, Chief Director of the Higher Education Section, Radka Wildová, Director of the Employment Department of the Labour Office of the Czech Republic - Jihlava Contact Point Monika Prášilová, Rector Emeritus of the University of West Bohemia Miroslav Holeček and representative of the Chamber of Commerce of the Czech Republic Martin Plachý. The moderation was taken over by Václav Báča, Vice Rector for Internal, External and International Relations of the VŠPJ.

The university was praised by guests as a model for work in the regions. It has come to the fore by prioritising its own scientific focus and its ability to respond to regional demand by preparing top professionals who help regional companies grow. The importance of partnership and coordination between the school and the region was also highlighted, as well as ensuring stability, creating quality conditions and following a long-term strategy. Furthermore, the promotion of the meaningfulness of lifelong learning was discussed in the context of creating studies as a value orientation from primary education. The differences between vocational and academic study programmes, their relevance and examples of good practice were also discussed, as well as the third role of universities, the specific benefits of a graduate of a regional university for a regional company, the need to focus not only on the profile of graduates, but on quality, conditions and infrastructure so as to avoid the migration of qualified persons to another region, etc.

The official discussion part was followed by questions from the expert audience. Among other things, there was talk about the absence of Talent Attraction Management tool, which aims to bring and retain talented people and professionals to the region, as well as more intensive cooperation with strategic actors in the regions and future prosperity as an effective motivation.

After the conclusion of the morning programme, guests attended the inauguration of the facilities of the Simulation Centre for Critical Care Nursing and Obstetrics at the Department of Health Studies, University of Applied Sciences.

The event was supported by Kraje Vysočina, the Statutory City of Jihlava and the European Danube-Vltava Region.
