On Thursday April 4, 2024, the rector of VŠPJ Zdeněk Horák laid a bouquet of flowers at the memorial plaque of Evžen Płock on Masaryk Square in Jihlava. He commemorated the 55th anniversary of the sacrifice of this Jihlava citizen, who burned himself to death on Good Friday 4 April 1969 in protest against the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops.
Evžen Plocek was a reformist communist and at the same time a devout Catholic who could not come to terms with the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops and the subsequent political developments that led to normalisation. On Good Friday 4 April 1969, he burned himself to death in protest in Jihlava. After Jan Palach and Jan Zajic, he became the third so-called living torch. He died on 9 April 1969 of burns in a hospital in Jihlava.
