This year the silent auction will support the Day and Weekly Residential Centre Jihlava, p.o.

As part of the 8th Representative Ball of the University of Applied Sciences, which will take place on Friday 15 March 2024 at the Workers' House Jihlava, a charity silent auction will traditionally take place. The Denní a týdenní stacionář Jihlava, p.o., which provides social services to people with mental and combined disabilities, has been selected as this year's beneficiary. The proceeds from the silent auction will be used by this contributory organization to support the sports activities of its Sport Club Ježci Jihlava, which is a member of the Special Olympics Czech Republic movement.

If you have been around the Jihlava Polytechnic for a while, you are probably not unfamiliar with the name of the Jihlava Day and Weekly Residential Centre. This contributory organization has already been supported by students and employees of the VŠPJ with a material collection in 2016 on the occasion of the traditional Christmas at the VŠPJ event. And this year they will have a unique opportunity to support Day and Weekly Residential Centre Jihlava also financially through a silent auction. The organization provides four social services for people with mental and combined disabilities, namely a day residential centre, a weekly residential centre, a sheltered housing and, from January 2024, a weekend respite service. Clients of the Day and Weekly Residential Centre Jihlava are encouraged to be as independent as possible and develop their skills, creative expression or sporting talents. There are many talented dancers, musicians, actors, artists and sportsmen among them. Their dance, music and theatre groups perform in public, artists present their work in exhibitions and this year there will even be a film of actors from the day and weekly residential centre competing in the Mental Power festival.

Clients at the residential home also participate in the dance group, The Getaway

Sport for personal development and social integration

The flagship of the organisation's sporting activities is the Sport Club Ježci Jihlava, a member of the Special Olympics Czech Republic movement. This movement is an associate member of the Czech Olympic Committee and belongs to the worldwide movement Special Olympics International, whose mission is the development of personality and integration of people with intellectual disabilities into society. The athletes of SK Ježci Jihlava regularly train and participate in national competitions in athletics, badminton, swimming, cycling, tossing, table tennis, bowling, bocce and now also in dance sport. They have managed to make the Czech national team for the Special Olympics World Summer Games four times in a row: 2011 in Athens, 2015 in Los Angeles, 2019 in Abu Dhabi and 2023 in Berlin. From Berlin, the largest Hedgehog team to date brought back two silver and one bronze medal and a lot of experiences. The proceeds from the silent auction would be used by SK Ježci Jihlava for example for renting sports venues, conducting training sessions or buying sports equipment.

From the Special Olympics in Berlin, the SK Ježci Jihlava team brought back two silver medals, i.e. medals in the colours of our 8th National Ball

How is the silent auction going?

The auction is "silent" in the sense that there is no designated raiser. In a silent auction, bids are written on a sheet of paper next to the auction items on display. At the end of the auction, which runs until 23.00, the highest bid wins the item. The aim of the silent auction is to raise the highest amount possible for the benefit of the supported organisation. Personal collection of the auctioned items is possible between 00.00 and 00.30. If you do not collect your item during the evening, we will contact you about collection during the following week.

If you would like to donate to the activities of SK Ježci Jihlava, please do not forget to come to the 8th Representative Ball of the University of Applied Sciences on Friday 15 March at the Workers' House Jihlava. Tickets for the ball can be purchased online HERE.
