High school students from Humpolec tried for one day what it is like to study at university

On Wednesday 28th February and Thursday 29th February, Klára Brožková from the Czech Agricultural Academy in Humpolec and Magdalena Křížová from the Dr. A. Hrdlička Gymnasium in Humpolec visited the Polytechnic University Jihlava. Both of them won in November 2023 in the Mládí Humpolec competition for the most versatile pupil and student of the town in the High Card category and thus got the opportunity to try one day at the VŠPJ.

Klárka Brožková expressed interest in spending her college day at the Department of Tourism. "As a student of the Agricultural College, I would like to continue in this field at university. However, I am also considering applying for one of the economics courses and the Department of Tourism at the University of Applied Sciences is definitely one of the options," said Klára Brožková. Magdalena Křížová, on the other hand, chose a day with technology and attended lectures and exercises at the Department of Technical Studies. "I like that the students here are not just numbers. There is a pleasant environment and well-equipped laboratories," Magdalena Křížová described the Polytechnic University Jihlava.

The two students toured the school and met with the rector of the VŠPJ, Zdeněk Horák.

The Polytechnic University of Jihlava is a partner of the Youth Humpolec competition since 2023 and within the High Card category offers winners the opportunity to participate in the Experience a Day at the VŠPJ project. We offer the opportunity to spend a day at the University of Applied Sciences not only to the winners themselves, but also to their friends or classmates. All they have to do is arrange a date with us and they can attend lectures and exercises, see the school and meet students and teachers. They can try out how things work at the university," explains the principle of the Experience a Day at VŠPJ project, its rector Zdeněk Horák.

The Youth Competition was established in 2001 on the initiative of the Bernard Family Brewery and the City of Humpolec, with the Municipal Cultural and Information Centre in Humpolec becoming the main organiser of the competition. The competition involves Humpolec primary schools (Hálkova and Hradská primary schools) and secondary schools (Gymnasium dr. Aleš Hrdlička, Humpolec, Czech Agricultural Academy in Humpolec, Secondary School of Informatics and Tourism Humpolec SČMSD, s.r.o.).

The competition runs all year round, concurrently with the school year, i.e. from September to June. The award ceremony takes place in the autumn of the following year for the previous period.

The long-term goal of the Youth Competition is to develop education in the city and to support talented pupils and students of Humpolec in their studies at primary and secondary schools and vocational schools.
