Since 2015, Poland's government, led by the conservative Law and Justice party, has systematically undermined the independence of the judiciary, attacking the essence of one of the three pillars of democracy. But some judges do not want to give up their independence. The long-term pressure on the courts has been strongly criticised by the European Union for years. The reform of the judiciary is intended to bring the courts under government control. Judges who do not play into the hands of the government, who are portrayed as elitists or outright enemies of Poland, face harassment in the form of threats and disciplinary proceedings. Despite this, a large number of Polish judges refuse to give up, continue to defend the independence of the law and are trying to mobilise the public and their European colleagues through demonstrations, lectures and courses. One of the main faces of the protest movement is Judge Igor Tuleya, who refreshes the difficult situation with his black humour. But how long can he and his colleagues resist the pressure?
