January 16 is officially commemorated in the Czech Republic as Jan Palach Memorial Day. The student Jan Palach rose up in 1969 to protest against the suppression of freedoms and the passive public pressure following the beginning of the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the army of the Warsaw Pact. Rector of VŠPJ Zdeněk Horák paid tribute on Monday 16. January 2023 by laying flowers at the memorial plaque of Evžen Plock at Masaryk Square in Jihlava.
Jan Palach inspired many people in Czechoslovakia as well as abroad by hisýýý actions. One of them was Evžen Plocek, a reformist communist and a devoutly religious Catholic who was unable to reconcile with the Czechoslovakia;with the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the troops of the Treaty of Var&scaroné and the náným politicalýwar. Therefore, on the Greatý pá tek of 4 April 1969, he protested in the town of Jihlava, becoming the thirdá so called living march after Jan Palach and Jan Zají.
